These events and reports will encourage vital discussion and collate insight into holistically addressing the UK data skills gap and creating a high-skill, data-driven economy.
What is the Apprenticeship Levy and how do I access it?
The Apprenticeship Levy is a tax, paid by employers with a pay bill of £3 million or more, which sets aside specific funding for workplace training. Companies who pay the Apprenticeship Levy have a pot of money set aside for training their employees.
This can be accessed through their gov.uk digital account. The Levy has so far supported more than 313,000 people to start their workplace training journey, in areas such as leadership, management, data skills and project management.
Below gives you two scenarios of how to access your levy to upskill employees.
Scenario 1
You have a payroll of less than £3m
Option 1 - Levy Gifting from organisations
You use funds from a Levy paying business - they are allowed to transfer 25% of their Levy funds. Corndel can help to introduce you to a prospective partner
Option 2 - Your own charity contribution
You pay a 5% contribution to the cost of the apprenticeship training, and the Government will pay the remaining 95%, up to the amount of funding available for that particular apprenticeship standard. The Corndel Diploma in Fundraising equates to £400 per learner.
Scenario 2
You have a payroll of more than £3m
0.5%
Your charity pays monthly deposits of 0.5% of your annual pay bill into a levy pot.
You have 24 months to use this on apprenticeship training or lose it.
What is Apprenticeship Levy gifting?
As many Levy-paying employers were struggling to utilise their annual Levy fund, the government introduced in April 2019 the option to gift up to 25% of their annual Apprenticeship Levy to other organisations. Many companies have chosen to utilise the Levy to support their corporate social responsibility activities – by donating their Levy to their charity partners who can then spend this on relevant learning for their people.
Levy-paying employers aren’t just restricted to charities, they can gift to any employer, which opens up the options of gifting to partners who are SMEs. Both the Levy-funded employer and the recipient organisation must be registered on the apprenticeship service. These funds can only be used for apprenticeship training and assessment.
If you want to gift there Levy, as of September 2021, here are the ways in which you can do it:
- Pledge funds through the Government online service. This allows large organisations to pledge a total amount of Levy they wish to gift in a financial year. Charities and SMEs can then apply to receive money from the pledge based on the criteria set by the organisation.
- Gift your Levy directly to your charity partner through the Digital Apprenticeship Service by Selecting your charity/employer partner(s)
- Your charity/employer partner contact must set up their digital account
- Connect your digital accounts – this allows funds to be drawn down for the relevant training
- Charity/employer partner creates training cohorts for relevant training
- Gifting employer approves the cohorts
If you are a Corndel client, we can work with you to help identify gifting opportunities and match you with a charity partner(s).
